What is otoplasty?

What would you do if you were born with defective ears or suffered an injury in the ears as a grown up?  Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed on the structure of the ear to correct a birth defect or one occasioned by an injury.

What does otoplasty do?

The aim of the procedure is to correct the ear in terms of shape, proportion or its size. This way, you will achieve a well balanced, naturally shaped ear so that they can look as normal as possible. People with protruding ears for instance suffers from low esteem issues hence will need this kind of surgery to correct the deformity.

What else does this cosmetic surgery treat?

Apart from correcting protruding ears, otoplasty corrects macrotia, which is a term used to describe the big sized ears. For others, it has everything to do with dissatisfaction with how their ears look like.

What happens during otoplasty?

The surgeon will remodel the cartilage  so that the ears become less protruding .one of the techniques used during this procedure is known as  ear splinting. A splint is used to put the ear into its new position. This technique is mostly used to treat ear issues in babies who are below 6 months of age.

The second one is of course otoplasty or elsewhere referred to as pinnaplasty. It is so referred to as because the cartilage in the ear is reshaped so that the ear comes as close to the head as possible. If there are some folds which are missing, the surgeon will create new ones.
